The Universal Law Giver
Over the centuries there are two constant truths found in the human race that thinkers have had to grapple with. The two constants are (1) that people every where have a sense of “right and wrong.” (2) The second constant is the need to worship or look to something beyond ourselves for help and our own identity. Obviously how we aply our sense of right and wrong and the type of higher power we worship vary greatly from people to people and group to group. But the simple fact that ever generation and every culture has these two common values can be discribed as two Universal Moral Laws. The Apostle Paul declares that… “all though they (all mankind) know God’s just requirenments…” (Rom.1:32). It is amazing to see the agreement between the major religions in regards to moral law (don’t kill, don’t steal, don’t disrespect parents, don’t lie, etc.) Along side this is the constant desire to “build idoles” or those things in life we want to give our life focus to, our money and time to serve. It may not be a supernatural god but it is what we give “worth-ship” to (Old English for worship). For example we may give great value to sports, communism, education or making and spending money. Check your check-book, it will tell you what you value the most.
These two “universal laws” are constants in every generation. These two laws point to what the French 17th Scientist Pascal called ” the God shapped vacaum” in every heart. Of all creatures, humans alone worry about what is right or wrong or seek to worship a higher purpose or power in life. All this points to a moral law giver and one that the human heart yearns to worship. Some might say these tendencies come from the evolution of humanity but evolution’s cry is “survival of the fittest.” What do you do when a man throws himself into a river to save a child or a total stranger. Here is a human doing what is right and alturistic even if it costs him or her their own life. Again this points to something beyond humanity that marks it in such a way that we can recognize the clear impact of that utimate personality we struggle to find our way back to. The ancient writter of Psalms 19 declares…”the heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the works of his hands.” We can argue about many things but these two laws we can not. And, would not such a moral law giver reveal himself to us? Of course that law giver would. Why build a life standard into the psychy of the corporate human personality and not reveal the ultimate purpose of life itself?! This moral law giver is concerned about justice and doing the right thing and will not the judge of all the earth do right? Yes, of course, He will not leave us alone and confused with our own inventions and inconsistencies. And would that moral law giver not try and rescue his creation when it goes wrong and slides towards destruction? Yes, he would. In fact this caring moral law giver has a name…. OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN. And he has sent us his most precious gift…His Son Jesus through who all creation can be restored to a just and peaceful future. Call out to him… he will respond and show himself to you.
Blessings!
